We’re all at the end of basketball season. Luckily today all the kids have a by-week so I was looking forward to having the day off. I didn’t realize that Texas starts baseball/softball earlier than Michigan, so my “day off” from basketball is only the “first day” of baseball/softball!
Shifting gears is the natural flow of the year when you have kids who are active. Going from one activity to another, one sport season to another makes the year go by at a quick pace. I still feel like I’m adjusting to living in Texas and the Waco area, yet I’ve been here for two sport seasons and am moving steadily into my third. I could solve the “pace” issue by letting my kids sit at home, play video games all day, and be fat slobs, but somehow that doesn’t appeal to my instinct to prepare the next “Humphries Generation.”
A former student of mine recently posted on his Facebook “Unless a man takes on more than he can do, he will never do all he can possibly can.” I hate the truth of this statement! To realize your potential, you got to get busy moving forward. Getting busy moving forward means you can’t spend too much time standing still, which in turn translates into very few Saturdays off!
Shifting gears has been a family motto this year. Moving things forward from our family, to Mariah and my professional life, to our church, its all part of our daily life now. When the pace and frustrations seem to translate into stress, I keep reminding myself that movement forward might be stressful and require sacrifice, but it sure is alot better than sitting still and going nowhere!
Amos is the pastor at Park Lake Drive Baptist Church in Waco, Texas. He is married to Mariah, and they have three children: Clay, Juliane, and Hannah. Mariah keeps Amos cool and up-to-date, while Amos keeps Mariah loose and occasionally frustrated.
