Healing

by Admin on July 23, 2010

Last night we went to a party to celebrate the adoption of Cayden Thomas Brown.  It was a great moment for our friends Clint and Beth Ann, after waiting over a year and jumping through the complicated hoops of the foster system, they were finally able to officially call Cayden their son.  I just couldn’t be more proud of Clint and Beth Ann, they’re great parents and an incredible blessing to our church.

Mental Health and Faith

by Admin on July 15, 2010

We’re talking about Mental Health at Park Lake.  Last week we tackled Depression, this week we’ll take on Anxiety, and finally we’ll finish up with Healing.  Its interesting how much the church has ignored the topic of Mental Health, as if Mental Health and Faith don’t mix.  For someone to feel free in a church setting to be honest and open about issues such as Depression would be like my daughter Hannah feeling comfortable swimming in a pool without a floaty or the side of the pool near by, as you can see by her picture here it isn’t an easy going experience.

Frustrated Priorities

June 23, 2010

I’m finding myself increasingly frustrated over the priorities that are coming out of Washington.  I recently read an article where the Nation of Mexico is taking the State of Arizona to court over their recent Immigration Law, Mexico is joining our own Federal Government in challenging a law that reflects an existing federal law.  I’m having a hard time figuring this out.

Wrong Side of Legendary

June 17, 2010

Our daughter Juliane’s softball team lost their second game last Saturday and was knocked out of the tournament by a group of Amazon 5th graders.  The girls did well but were clearly overmatched.  We were both very proud of Juliane and her whole team

Clay is on a great team.  They hadn’t lost yet, and seemed to be stacked going into their game on Wednesday Night.  A win would have put them straight to the championship game on Saturday, and losing meant a game on Friday night to extend their season through the losers bracket.  Friday, here we come!

Game 1 – Humphries Nation split – Boys 1 win, Girls 1 loss

June 9, 2010

Game 1 of the City Tournament is in the bag and we’re on both sides of the brackets.  Clay’s China Spring Dodgers, who haven’t lost a game yet, pulled out a nail biter by rallying in the final two innings to win 9-8 against the second place team from Midway, a local little league powerhouse community.  Juliane’s China Spring Blue Crush lost a hard fought battle against the Lacy Lakeview first place team 8-10, even though Jude just finished 2nd grade and most her team is in 3rd or 4th, while the other team was stacked with 5th graders.

Let the games begin!

June 3, 2010

I can’t believe but all three of my kids have ended the spring tee-ball/softball/baseball season in first place!  Each one did well for their teams, with Juliane and Clay playing in a competitive league.  The one who shined the most was Hannah in tee-ball!  She did great fielding and showed an aggressive side that we hadn’t seen before.  I helped coach her team, while Mariah juggled the other two, which made for a pretty busy spring for us.

Lost

May 27, 2010

I fell in love with the show Lost after I watched 5 minutes of the first season.  The whole concept was riveting, “if you were stranded on a deserted island” played out in front of your eyes.  I loved how the writers tackled stereotypes and character judgements, and every episode left you thinking.

Who would you want to be on an island with?  Ironically, the show left you feeling comfortable with an extremely obese guy with mental illness, a con-man, a terrorist, and type A spinal surgeon with a savior complex.  Wow!

Mother’s Day = Dad, Don’t Screw This Up Day

May 7, 2010

There are currently two days out of the year that bring me more anxiety than any others – Mother’s Day and Valentine’s Day.  I’m sure when I turn 40 and my yearly medical check up starts with a Prostate Exam that day will be added to the list, but for now these two days keep me up at night!

Broken Lamps = Love’s true expression

April 24, 2010

When Mariah and I got married we both were flying by the seat of our pants.  Neither of us had anything of value, and working minimal wage jobs didn’t leave much room for material improvement.  The few “nice” things we did have were treasured with extreme sensitivity.  This is where the lamps come in.  Mariah had brought these two white lamps into the marriage that were the remnants of her freshman apartment at University of New Mexico.  They were cool, stylish, and a little too hip for me, I cared less about light, I just wanted a TV.  Nevertheless, I cared for the lamps as if they were a long lost family heirloom, carefully taking them across the country to Michigan, making sure they survived unhurt.  Throughout our marriage I have painstakingly protected the precious lamps from the violence of Downriver Detroit, the destructive power of youth group meetings, and another move across country back to Texas.  Only once did I let my guard down, which allowed the anointed one (our first born Clay) a small opportunity to bump into the table it stood on and knock it into a few dozen pieces that ended in a special can at the curb with “Taps” being performed on trash day.
