Why are you crying?!!

March 4th, 2010 by Admin

DSCF6207Last Sunday Juliane and Hannah’s 1-2 grade basketball team won their championship game.  Poor Hannah spent the day dealing with a stomach virus and couldn’t make the game, so on the way home I called up Mariah so Juliane could share with her Mom and sister that they had just won.  Now, Clay and myself were pumped and pretty excited, it was a great game that Juliane just stole from the other team with some classic Humphries defense, and we left the gym looking for someone to go punch in the arm because we had to get all the energy out.  Juliane on the other hand got on the phone with her Mom and started to cry uncontrollably!  She sobbed all the way home, into the house, and into her sick sister’s arms.  All I could do was look at Clay and wonder if it was this bad after they won, what the heck would have happened if they lost?

The Process

image_business_processOne of the more interesting aspects of my job is helping people through difficult issues.  It can be challenging at times, but the rewards are great.  Seeing someone grab hold of faith and take those initial steps into God’s will is a nice feeling.  I’ve recently talked to several people in various stages of trials and one common theme keeps coming up.

Shifting Gears

February 20th, 2010 by Admin

gear shiftWe’re all at the end of basketball season.  Luckily today all the kids have a by-week so I was looking forward to having the day off.  I didn’t realize that Texas starts baseball/softball earlier than Michigan, so my “day off” from basketball is only the “first day” of baseball/softball!

Shifting gears is the natural flow of the year when you have kids who are active.  Going from one activity to another, one sport season to another makes the year go by at a quick pace.  I still feel like I’m adjusting to living in Texas and the Waco area, yet I’ve been here for two sport seasons and am moving steadily into my third.  I could solve the “pace” issue by letting my kids sit at home, play video games all day, and be fat slobs, but somehow that doesn’t appeal to my instinct to prepare the next “Humphries Generation.”

Healing vs Curing

February 12th, 2010 by Admin

healing_touchThe following article was shared with me by one of the men in my church.  It is found on the Wacotrib.com website and was written by Michael Attas on February 9, 2010.  It was so powerful I wanted to share it with you.

The Rev. John Polkinghorne is an Anglican priest and a particle physicist in Cambridge, England.

Along with Steven Hawking, he is considered one of the leading nuclear scientists in the 20th century.

A leading voice in the efforts to reconcile science and religion, I heard him tell a powerful story 15 years ago.

Discovering Love

dr-bill-austinA few months ago I was talking with Dr Bill Austin about possible sermons he could preach for us at Park Lake Dr Baptist Church.  Dr Austin and I have an interesting relationship, for those of you who don’t know I replaced Dr Austin at Park Lake in late August after he served as Senior Pastor for a little over a year.  Dr Austin was suffering from poor health and resigned after his doctor’s recommendation, thus allowing the door to be opened for Humphries Nation to invade Waco.

Tech Advancement is Killing Me!

front-load-washer-samsung-wf419I was so pumped a few years ago when we bit the bullet and bought new appliances.  We got a front loader washer and was immediately impressed with the savings on water and how you almost had to be on top of it to hear anything.  When we brought it home I almost killed Mariah getting it down into the basement, with my leg in a cast from having a tumor in my ankle, I almost dropped the thing down the stairs after slipping on the snow covered landing at the back door.  I was paid back getting it out of the basement for the move to Waco, dropping the %&*#! thing on the same stupid ankle after wrestling it up the stairs.  So to say the least, I have alot invested in this washer!

One man’s gain is another man’s loss

Hannah surpriseWe recently sold our house in Detroit.  It was a grueling process that started back in April of 2009, we saw two buyers fall through as a result of the bank making the sale almost impossible.  I would probably be more excited, but we had to short-sale the property and the eventual buyer bought the house for less than half of what I paid for it 8 years ago.  To add insult to injury, the bank insisted that we pay $10,000 cash to close the deal.  I guess loosing all the value in your home, messing up your credit for two-four years, and spending excess cash to sure up a sale wasn’t enough for the bank, they wanted to make sure they made every last penny on my $60,000 loss.

My Children’s Threat

islam_dominateOn Wednesday Nights at Park Lake I’ve been using the time to answer people’s questions, whatever the topic.  Several expressed interest in the current conflict with radical Islam, and how this was going to affect their grandchildren.

What a great topic!  Islam is so foreign to most American Christians, and we really have an ignorant view of  the conflict at hand.  I believe its important to take the time to understand the “other side” and explore the basis for the Islamic Worldview, it is really there that we see how dangerous this movement is to world stability and the expression of our American rights.

2010 – The Year of Growth

January 6th, 2010 by Admin

growthSunday we talked about our need as a church to grow this year.  2010 is a good year to grow.  My cousin has a theme for the year … “Win in 2010″ and I like that.  This is a year to be active, to go for it.  I’m excited about what the year will bring.

Thank God thats over with!

DSCF5869This year was a little crazy for Humphries Nation.  We experienced major life altering change that we won’t feel the full impact for decades to come, and I’m looking forward to a year that we can get “settled” in a bit.

Highpoints to the year:

5. Disney World for a week – Though it was two days too long, it was hotter than Hades and I finally rode “Its a small world afterall”,  the kids had the time of their lives and Mariah and I enjoyed the experience.  I loved having my sister Angie and her husband Rick with us, it allowed for “adult moments” which kept the kids from domestic violence and CPS from being called in.  I can now go to my grave feeling relieved that I made my American Mecca journey!
